Away3D Lite on the Nexus One
3d Flash, Applications, Away3d video demos June 10th, 2010After a bit of experimenting with the beta of AIR for Android, I’ve managed to successfully create a couple of demos to show off Away3D Lite running on the Android operating system, using my trusty Nexus One handset. The above video demonstrates that the Google phone is more than capable of handling the playback of Flash content, and can easily be used along with Away3D Lite to create some detailed 3D content. If you’re interested in trying AIR for Android yourself, head over to http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air2/android/ to sign up for the beta program.

[...] Rob Bateman had this awesome demo of Away 3D Lite on the Google Nexus One. This is the kind of demo content Apple doesn’t want you to see, because it makes HTML5 seem very immature at this stage in the game. [...]

really nice, do you know what framerate its running at? the second demo looks a little sluggish. Also what version of android are you running?
June 10th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
@phil andrews
The Android version is 2.2 (Froyo) but i didn’t really notice any difference in AIR framerates between 2.1 and 2.2
The framerate of the second demo is around 15fps, rendering ~2000 polys. I’m pretty sure the first demo could be optimised further with a bit of work, but its intention was to show an unoptimised Away3D Lite scene.

fantastic stuff rob!
I was wondering if there were any plans to flesh out the webgl version of away3dlite? I imagine webgl will be fantastic on android/iphone in the future.
I hope you don’t mind, I spent some time reversing the material classes from the existing webgl demo – not finished yet but making them compatible with current haxe classes

@Jarrad
The WebGL classes are definitely a work in progress, and one of the obvious advantages is the potential support in the mobile market. The work on the material classes sound great – if you’re interested in helping out I’ll email you more details. Cheers!

How did you make the land and the sea?
Did you use polygons or NURBS or something different? Procedural textures or bitmaps?
November 22nd, 2010 at 5:41 am
@AlexG
Land and sea were created from an adapted script originally created by pixelero: http://pixelero.wordpress.com/2009/01/22/flight-25/. The textures are taking their UV from the same procedural heightmaps used for the terrain, nothing more complex than that
